Rotation turns a bone about its axis; circumduction traces a cone (a combination of four movements); supination/pronation turn the forearm palm-up/palm-down at the radio-ulnar joint.

  • Rotation — turning a bone about its own long axis, without moving the whole limb away from the body. Example: internal/external rotation of the arm at the shoulder in a tennis serve, or turning the head side to side.
  • Circumduction — a circular, cone-tracing movement that combines flexion, extension, abduction and adduction in sequence, so the end of the limb moves in a circle while the joint stays fixed. Example: arm circles or a cricket bowler's arm wind-up.
  • Supination and pronation — rotational movements of the forearm at the radio-ulnar joint: supination turns the palm to face upward, while pronation turns the palm to face downward. Example: turning the palm up to receive, or down to strike a table-tennis forehand. …
