Root hairs absorb water and minerals, trichomes reduce water loss, and guard cells (assisted by subsidiary cells) regulate the opening and closing of stomata — all are specialised epidermal cells serving distinct functions.

Although the epidermis is often thought of as a simple, protective covering, many of its cells are modified into distinct forms, each carrying out a specialised job:

  • Root hairs are single-celled outgrowths of the epidermal (epiblema) cells of the root. By projecting into the soil, they greatly enlarge the surface area available for the uptake of water and dissolved minerals.
  • Trichomes, found on the epidermis of stems and other shoot parts, are typically multicellular and can vary widely in form — branched or unbranched, soft or stiff, and sometimes secretory. Their main role is to reduce water loss caused by transpiration, and in some cases they also offer physical protection or produce secretions. …
