Tidal volume is the air of one normal breath, residual volume is the air the lungs can never expel, and asthma is a wheezing breathing difficulty caused by inflamed airways.

a. Tidal Volume (TV). This is the volume of air breathed in or out during a single normal, resting breath, amounting to about 500 mL. At a normal breathing rate of 12 to 16 breaths per minute, this works out to roughly 6 to 8 litres of air moved per minute.

b. Residual Volume (RV). This is the air that is left in the lungs even after the most forcible possible expiration — the lungs are never completely emptied of air. It amounts to about 1100 to 1200 mL. …
