Discovering a plant that appears to be new is only the starting point; establishing it as a genuine new species and giving it a proper place in the taxonomic system requires a defined process.
- Identification comes first: the scientist studies the plant's external and internal structure, its cellular features, and other characters, comparing them carefully against known, already-described species to confirm that this plant genuinely does not match any of them. Correct identification is essential, because naming is only meaningful once it is clear exactly which organism is being named.
- Classification follows: using the characters identified, the plant is placed into the taxonomic hierarchy. It is grouped with the species it shares the most characters with into a genus, that genus is placed within a family on the basis of shared vegetative and reproductive features, and so on upward through order, class and division, ultimately sitting within Kingdom Plantae. …
