Naming each drawn structure by the IUPAC rules (longest chain through the principal

group, lowest locants, alphabetical prefixes): (a) propylbenzene · (b) 3-methylhexanenitrile · (c) 2,5-dimethylheptane · (d) 3-bromo-3-chloroheptane · (e) 3-chloropropanal · (f) 2,2-dichloroethanol.

Work each structure back to a name: find the parent chain (through the principal

functional group where there is one), number for the lowest locants, and cite substituents

alphabetically.

(a) A benzene ring bearing a three-carbon chain, CX6HX5−CHX2CHX2CHX3\ce{C6H5-CH2CH2CH3} — the ring is the

parent, the chain a substituent: propylbenzene.

(b) A nitrile: the longest chain that includes the −C≡N\ce{-C#N} carbon is six carbons

long with a methyl branch. Numbering from the nitrile carbon (C-1) puts the methyl at C-3:

3-methylhexanenitrile.

(c) A saturated seven-carbon chain (heptane) with methyl branches at C-2 and C-5:

2,5-dimethylheptane.

(d) A heptane chain carrying a chlorine and a bromine on the same carbon (C-3); …
