The Starting Point: Electrical Discharge Through Gases
By the 1890s the indivisible-atom picture was cracking. The decisive experiments all came from one family of apparatus: a sealed glass tube in which electricity is forced through a gas at very low pressure. What streamed through those tubes — and how it behaved in electric and magnetic fields — revealed, one particle at a time, what atoms are actually made of.
