Assign the 100100 students to a section of 4040 and a section of 6060 at random. The probability you and your friend land in the same section is 1733\dfrac{17}{33}, and in different sections is 1633\dfrac{16}{33}.

Two sections are formed from 100100 students: one of size 4040 and one of size 6060. Focus on the two named people — you and your friend — and ask where they end up. Because the sections have different sizes, the answer is not simply 12\tfrac12.

Watch out

It is tempting to say "same section" has probability 12\tfrac12 because there are two sections. But the larger section (size 6060) is more likely to hold both of you than the smaller one, so the sizes must be used.

(a) Both in the same section

Place the two people one after another. "Same section" happens in two disjoint ways:

  • Both in the 4040-section: the first person lands there with probability 40100\dfrac{40}{100}, and then the second with probability 3999\dfrac{39}{99}:

40100⋅3999=15609900=26165.\frac{40}{100}\cdot\frac{39}{99}=\frac{1560}{9900}=\frac{26}{165}.

  • Both in the 6060-section: similarly, 60100⋅5999=35409900=59165.\frac{60}{100}\cdot\frac{59}{99}=\frac{3540}{9900}=\frac{59}{165}. …
