Rupak Ltd. issued 10,000 shares of ₹100. Application and allotment were received in full; on the first call one member (200 shares) defaulted, and another member (500 shares) paid the final call in advance. As the final call was never made, that advance is held in Calls in Advance. Total cash received is ₹7,57,500, with Calls in Arrears of ₹5,000 and Calls in Advance of ₹12,500.

Concept and Accounting Treatment

Share money is collected in stages — application, allotment and calls — each recorded separately. When a member fails to pay a call, the shortfall is a Calls in Arrears (a deduction from called-up capital). When a member pays an instalment not yet called, the amount is a Calls in Advance (a liability), because the company has not yet made that call. Since the final call was never made, the money the 500-share member paid towards it stays in Calls in Advance.

Working Notes

  • Per share: Application ₹20, Allotment ₹30, First call ₹25, Final call ₹25 (the balance in two calls of ₹25 each).
  • First call: due 10,000 × ₹25 = ₹2,50,000; received on 9,800 shares = ₹2,45,000; unpaid on 200 shares = ₹5,000 (Calls in Arrears).
  • Calls in Advance: the member holding 500 shares paid the final call of ₹25 in advance = 500 × ₹25 = ₹12,500.
  • Total cash: ₹2,00,000 + ₹3,00,000 + ₹2,45,000 + ₹12,500 = ₹7,57,500.
