A malware program, once written, still has to reach your machine before it can do any damage. The book lists four common routes it takes to get there.
Downloaded from the Internet
Most infections happen because the user unintentionally downloads malware onto the hard drive. Attackers are skilled at disguising their malicious files, so the download looks harmless or even attractive. The book specifically warns against files promoted as "free stuff" — these are a common trap. Care is needed with every download, but especially with those.
Spam Email
You often receive unsolicited email containing embedded hyperlinks or attached files. Clicking the link or opening the attachment can install malware on your system. The danger is that these emails are designed to look legitimate enough that you engage with them.
