Pneumonia is diagnosed by respiratory symptoms like difficulty in breathing, fever with chills, cough, and headache — not by digestive or abdominal issues.

When we talk about diagnosing diseases, the symptoms a patient presents are often the first clue. But here's the key: different diseases attack different systems of the body. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs — specifically, the alveoli (the tiny air sacs where gas exchange happens). So the symptoms will always be centred on the respiratory system.

Think about what happens when the lungs are infected. The air sacs fill with fluid or pus, making it hard for oxygen to reach the blood. That's why the patient struggles to breathe. The body's immune response to this infection causes fever and chills. The irritation in the airways triggers a cough, and the lack of oxygen combined with the infection often leads to a headache.

Now look at the other options. Option (B) mentions constipation, abdominal pain, cramps, and blood clots — these point towards digestive or circulatory issues, not a lung infection. Option (C) includes nasal congestion and discharge, which are more typical of the common cold or sinusitis, and constipation again appears, which is unrelated. Option (D) lists stomach pain, loss of appetite, and constipation — these are classic signs of gastrointestinal infections like typhoid or food poisoning, not pneumonia.

Note

The NCERT textbook for Class 11 (Biology, Chapter 7: Human Health and Disease) specifically lists the symptoms of pneumonia as: "fever, chills, cough, headache, and difficulty in respiration." Notice that digestive symptoms are absent. …
