Biogas is a methane-rich fuel gas generated when anaerobic (methanogenic) bacteria digest organic waste like cattle dung in the absence of oxygen, inside a biogas plant/gobar gas plant.

What is biogas? Biogas is a mixture of gases — predominantly methane (CH₄), along with CO2, H2S, and other gases — produced by the anaerobic (oxygen-free) breakdown of organic matter such as cattle dung, plant waste, and other biodegradable material. It is used as a fuel for cooking and lighting, and the leftover slurry serves as excellent manure.
