ART covers techniques like IVF that assist couples unable to conceive naturally; amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic test based on foetal cells in amniotic fluid.

  1. ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology): a group of special techniques that help couples who are unable to conceive naturally (infertile couples) to have children, by assisting one or more steps of the normal reproductive process.
  2. Two ART methods:
  • IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) - popularly called the 'test-tube baby' programme, where ova from the wife/donor and sperm from the husband/donor are collected and fertilised outside the body (in the laboratory) under simulated conditions, and the resulting early embryo is either transferred into the fallopian tube (ZIFT, Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer) or into the uterus (IUT) to continue development.
  • GIFT (Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer) - transfer of an ovum collected from a donor into the fallopian tube of another female who cannot produce ova but can provide a suitable environment for fertilisation and development. (ICSI - Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection - where a sperm is directly injected into the ovum, is another valid example.) …
