The carbylamine (isocyanide) reaction is a positive test for a primary amine: heating it with chloroform and alcoholic KOH gives a foul-smelling alkyl isocyanide.

Explanation. Only primary amines (aliphatic or aromatic) give this reaction; secondary and tertiary amines do not react, so it is used as a diagnostic test for primary amines.
