During discharge of a lead-acid battery, the lead anode is oxidized to PbSO4 and the PbO2 cathode is reduced to PbSO4, both consuming sulfuric acid (H2SO4) from the electrolyte.

The lead-acid storage cell has a lead (Pb) plate as the anode (negative electrode) and a lead dioxide (PbO2) plate as the cathode (positive electrode), with dilute sulfuric acid as the electrolyte.

At the anode (oxidation):

Pb(s) + SO4^2-(aq) --> PbSO4(s) + 2e-

At the cathode (reduction):

PbO2(s) + SO4^2-(aq) + 4H+(aq) + 2e- --> PbSO4(s) + 2H2O(l)

Overall cell reaction (discharge):

Pb(s) + PbO2(s) + 2H2SO4(aq) --> 2PbSO4(s) + 2H2O(l)
