Animal husbandry, fisheries and horticulture are the three pillars of agricultural diversification. They provide stable income and employment (especially for women and small farmers), improve nutrition, and have grown fast — through Operation Flood in dairying and the Golden Revolution in horticulture.

Animal husbandry

  • In India, farmers mostly use the mixed crop-livestock farming system — cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, poultry and other livestock alongside crops.
  • It provides increased stability in income, food security, transport and fuel, and gainful employment throughout the year.
  • The dairy sector has expanded greatly; milk production increased dramatically through Operation Flood (the white revolution), organised through cooperatives on the AMUL pattern.
  • It is a major source of self-employment for women and for the landless and small farmers.

Fisheries

  • The fishing community regards water as a mother and a source of livelihood.
  • Fisheries include inland sources (rivers, lakes, ponds, streams) and marine sources (seas and oceans).
  • Fisheries contribute a rising share to output and to exports, and provide livelihood and food security to fishing communities.
  • However, fishworkers, especially women, face problems of low income, indebtedness and lack of infrastructure, and need support.

Horticulture

  • Horticulture covers fruits, vegetables, tuber crops, flowers (floriculture), medicinal and aromatic plants, spices and plantation crops.
  • It enhances the nutritional value of food, provides employment and adds to income.
  • The period 1991-2003 (the Golden Revolution) made India a world leader in the production of mangoes, bananas, coconuts, cashew nuts and several spices, and second in fruits and vegetables. …
