The IOA was founded in 1927 by Sir Dorabji Tata and Dr A.G. Noehren, recognised by the IOC that same year, and later evolved from selecting athletes itself to handing that role to the National Sports Federations.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is India's National Olympic Committee — a non-profit organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, founded in 1927 by Sir Dorabji Tata as its first President and Dr A.G. Noehren as Secretary General. It was recognised by the International Olympic Committee in the same year.

The IOA's prime objective was to promote and develop the Olympic Movement in India.
