These three pairs each contrast a more open, less-specialised condition (blood flooding tissues, egg-laying, larva-based development) against a more contained, direct alternative (vessel-confined blood, live birth, no larval stage).

Each pair describes a fundamental physiological or developmental contrast used across the classification of animals.

a. Open vs closed circulatory system

  • In the open type, blood is pumped out of the heart and the tissues and cells are bathed directly in it, as seen in arthropods.
  • In the closed type, blood is kept within a series of vessels of differing diameters — arteries, veins and capillaries — and circulates through them without directly flooding the tissues, as seen in annelids and chordates.

b. Oviparity vs viviparity

  • Oviparous animals lay eggs, and the young develop outside the mother's body after the eggs are laid — most reptiles, birds and many fishes follow this pattern.
  • Viviparous animals give birth to live young that have already developed inside the mother's body — most placental mammals follow this pattern, in contrast to the egg-laying platypus.

c. Direct vs indirect development …
