Cortisol, the main glucocorticoid secreted by the adrenal cortex, is the steroid that suppresses inflammatory responses, alongside several other broad metabolic functions.

The adrenal cortex secretes a family of steroid hormones called corticoids, one group of which is the glucocorticoids, involved chiefly in carbohydrate metabolism. Cortisol is the main glucocorticoid in the body, and among its several actions is producing anti-inflammatory effects and suppressing the immune response, which is the specific control of inflammation being asked about here.

Beyond this, cortisol has a wide range of other important functions:

  • Stimulating gluconeogenesis (making new glucose), lipolysis (breakdown of fats) and proteolysis (breakdown of proteins).
  • Inhibiting the uptake and use of amino acids by cells.
  • Stimulating red blood cell production.
  • Helping maintain the cardiovascular system and normal kidney function. …
