ABA is called the stress hormone because it enables a plant to survive unfavourable conditions — closing stomata to conserve water, inhibiting growth and metabolism, and inducing dormancy and stress tolerance.

Abscisic acid (ABA) was originally discovered for its role in regulating abscission and dormancy, but like other PGRs it has wide-ranging effects on plant growth and development. It is called the stress hormone for the following reasons:

  • It acts as a general plant growth inhibitor and an inhibitor of plant metabolism, slowing down growth when conditions are unfavourable.
  • It inhibits seed germination, preventing seeds from sprouting at the wrong time.
  • It stimulates the closure of stomata. This is the most important stress response: when a plant faces water stress (drought), ABA triggers stomatal closure, greatly reducing transpiration and conserving water.
  • It increases the tolerance of plants to various kinds of stresses, so plants exposed to drought and similar adverse conditions can better survive them. For this reason ABA is also referred to as the stress tolerance hormone. …
