The five natural plant growth regulators are auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene and abscisic acid; gibberellins were discovered from a fungal rice disease and are widely used to elongate stems, delay senescence and boost crop yields.

The five main groups of natural plant growth regulators (PGRs) are:

  1. Auxins
  2. Gibberellins
  3. Cytokinins
  4. Ethylene
  5. Abscisic acid (ABA)

Of these, auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins are chiefly growth promoters, while ABA (and largely ethylene) act as growth inhibitors.

A note on Gibberellins

Discovery: Gibberellins were discovered through the study of the 'bakanae' or foolish seedling disease of rice, caused by the fungal pathogen Gibberella fujikuroi. E. Kurosawa (1926) reported that the disease symptoms — abnormally tall, spindly seedlings — appeared in rice when the plants were treated with sterile filtrates of the fungus. The active substances responsible were later identified as gibberellic acid (GA3). More than 100 gibberellins (denoted GA1, GA2, GA3 and so on) have since been reported from fungi and higher plants, and all of them are acidic.

Physiological functions:

  • They cause an increase in the length of the axis and produce a wide range of physiological responses.
  • Gibberellic acid (GA3) delays senescence, so fruits can be left on the tree longer to extend the marketing period.
  • GA3 is used to speed up the malting process in the brewing industry.
  • Gibberellins promote bolting — internode elongation just prior to flowering — in rosette plants such as beet, cabbages and other plants with a rosette habit.

Agricultural and horticultural applications:

  • Their ability to increase axis length is used to increase the length of grape stalks. …
