(a) Condensed: CH3CH(CH3)CH(CH3)CH2CH2CH2OH\text{CH}_3\text{CH(CH}_3\text{)CH(CH}_3\text{)CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{OH} (4,5-dimethylhexan-1-ol). (b) Condensed: N≡C–CH(OH)–C≡N\text{N}\equiv\text{C–CH(OH)–C}\equiv\text{N}.

The condensed formula lists the atoms in sequence with branches in parentheses. The bond-line (skeletal) formula draws the carbon skeleton as a zig-zag: each vertex and line-end is a carbon atom, C–H bonds are implied, and heteroatoms (O, N) with their attached hydrogens are shown explicitly.

(a) HOCH₂CH₂CH₂CH(CH₃)CH(CH₃)CH₃

The longest chain is 6 carbons; carbons 4 and 5 each carry a methyl branch, and C1 bears the –OH group (8 carbons in all).

Condensed formula: HOCH2CH2CH2CH(CH3)CH(CH3)CH3\text{HOCH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH(CH}_3\text{)CH(CH}_3\text{)CH}_3

Bond-line formula: a six-carbon zig-zag chain with –OH written at one terminal carbon (C1); one short line (a methyl group) projects from the 4th vertex and another from the 5th vertex, counting from the –OH end. Hydrogens on carbon are not drawn.

(b) N≡C–CH(OH)–C≡N

Three carbons: a central CH bearing an –OH, flanked by two nitrile (–C≡N) groups.

Condensed formula: N≡C–CH(OH)–C≡N\text{N}\equiv\text{C–CH(OH)–C}\equiv\text{N} …
