The RBI issues currency, is banker to the government and to banks, is lender of last resort, manages foreign exchange, and controls credit.

The Reserve Bank of India is the central bank of the country and performs the following important functions:

  1. Issue of currency (note issue) — The RBI has the sole monopoly of issuing currency notes (except one-rupee notes and coins issued by the Government). This ensures uniformity and control over the money supply.

  2. Banker to the government — It keeps the accounts of the central and state governments, receives their receipts and makes payments, manages public debt, and advises the government on financial and economic matters.

  3. Bankers' bank and supervisor — Commercial banks keep a part of their reserves with the RBI, it provides them clearing and remittance facilities, and it regulates and supervises their working (licensing, inspection, directions).

  4. Lender of last resort — When commercial banks fail to meet their financial needs from other sources, the RBI provides them funds, maintaining confidence in the banking system.

  5. Custodian of foreign exchange reserves — It keeps and manages the country's foreign exchange and gold reserves and maintains the external value (exchange rate) of the rupee.
