Stock is measured at a point of time; flow is measured over a period of time.

The distinction between stock and flow is fundamental in macroeconomics:

  1. Meaning — A stock is a quantity measured at a particular point of time. A flow is a quantity measured over a period (interval) of time.

  2. Time dimension — A stock has no time-period dimension (it is 'as on' a date). A flow always has a time dimension such as per hour, per month or per year.

  3. Examples — Stock: the amount of water in a tank at a moment, wealth, capital, money supply on a date, population on a date. Flow: income, investment, consumption, exports, the amount of water flowing into the tank per minute.

  4. Relationship — A flow affects the stock. For instance, investment (a flow) during the year adds to the capital stock; saving (a flow) adds to wealth (a stock).

  5. Nature — A stock is static in nature while a flow is dynamic.
