National income is the total factor income earned by the normal residents of a country in a year, i.e. NNP at factor cost.

National income is the sum total of the factor incomes — rent (for land), wages (for labour), interest (for capital) and profit (for enterprise) — earned by the normal residents of a country for their productive services during an accounting year (normally 1 April to 31 March in India). In national-income aggregates it is equal to Net National Product at Factor Cost (NNP at FC).

Important points:

  1. It includes income earned by normal residents, both within the country and abroad (hence 'National'), but excludes income of non-residents earned within the country.
  2. It is a 'net' concept (after deducting depreciation) and is measured at factor cost (after removing net indirect taxes).
  3. It is a flow, measured over a period (one year).
  4. It can be estimated by three methods — the value-added (production) method, the income method and the expenditure method — all of which, in principle, give the same figure. …
