A production function shows the maximum output obtainable from given quantities of inputs with a given technology.

A production function states the technical or functional relationship between the inputs (factors of production) used by a firm and the maximum output that can be obtained from those inputs, given the state of technology. It is written as:

Q = f(L, K, ...)

where Q is the quantity of output, and L, K, etc. represent the quantities of factors such as labour and capital.

Key points: (i) it shows only the maximum output for each combination of inputs (it assumes technical efficiency); (ii) it is based on a given level of technology — if technology improves, the production function changes; (iii) it is a flow concept, relating input used per period to output per period.
