A production function shows the maximum output that can be produced from given quantities of inputs with a given technology.

A production function states the technical relationship between the inputs used and the maximum output that can be obtained from them, for a given state of technology. It is expressed as:

Q = f(L, K, ...)

where Q is the quantity of output, and L (labour), K (capital), etc. are the quantities of the factors of production.

Key points: (i) it shows the maximum output for each input combination (technical efficiency is assumed); (ii) it depends on the given technology — a change in technology changes the production function; (iii) it is a flow concept, relating inputs used per period to output per period.
