Demand is the quantity of a good a consumer is willing and able to buy at a given price in a given period.

In ordinary language 'demand' means a desire, but in economics demand has a precise meaning. Demand is the quantity of a commodity that a consumer is willing to purchase and is able to purchase (has the money to buy) at a particular price during a particular period of time.

Thus three conditions must be fulfilled for a desire to become demand: (i) desire to buy the good, (ii) ability (sufficient money/purchasing power), and (iii) willingness to spend that money. For example, a poor man's wish for a car is only a desire, not demand, because he lacks the ability to pay.
