Building the model: a classic working lung model uses a clear plastic bottle with the bottom cut off, two balloons tied to the ends of a Y-shaped tube (or two straws) inserted through the bottle's neck to represent the two lungs and the airway (trachea/bronchi), and a larger balloon or stretched membrane sealed across the open bottom to represent the diaphragm. Pulling the diaphragm membrane down increases the volume inside the bottle, dropping the pressure around the balloon-lungs so they inflate - exactly mimicking real inhalation; releasing it lets the balloons deflate (exhalation). …
