Biotech gives safe recombinant vaccines, gene therapy for genetic defects, and recombinant human insulin (Humulin).

1. Vaccine production. Conventional vaccines use killed/attenuated pathogens grown in bulk. Using rDNA technology, the gene coding for an antigen (e.g. the surface antigen of the hepatitis-B virus) is inserted into yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), which produces the antigen safely. Such recombinant vaccines (e.g. the hepatitis-B vaccine) are safer, cheaper and available in large quantities. Biotech also allows quick production of vaccines against many pathogens.

2. Gene therapy. This is a collection of methods that correct a gene defect by delivering a normal functional gene into the cells/tissues of a person. The first clinical case (1990) treated a girl with adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency (a cause of SCID): lymphocytes were taken out, a functional ADA gene was introduced via a retroviral vector, and the cells were returned. If the gene is introduced into germ/early embryonic cells, the cure can be permanent.
