An ecosystem is a self-sustaining functional unit of nature where the biotic community interacts with its abiotic (physical) environment, with flow of energy and cycling of nutrients. Its two components are abiotic (physical/chemical) and biotic (producers, consumers, decomposers).

What is an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a functional unit of nature in which the living organisms (biotic community) interact among themselves and with their physical (abiotic) environment, exchanging energy and matter. The term was coined by A. G. Tansley. Ecosystems may be natural (forest, grassland, desert, pond, lake, ocean) or artificial/man-made (crop field, aquarium). It functions through energy flow, nutrient cycling, productivity, decomposition and ecological succession.

Components of an ecosystem — two main types:

A. Abiotic components (non-living):

  • Inorganic substances — CC, NN, CO2CO_2, H2OH_2O, minerals involved in nutrient cycling.
  • Organic substances — proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and humus that link the biotic and abiotic parts.
  • Climatic (physical) factors — light, temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind, soil and water (edaphic factors) — these regulate the type and functioning of the ecosystem.

B. Biotic components (living) — classified by their role (trophic level):

  1. Producers (autotrophs) — green plants and photosynthetic bacteria that make their own food (from CO2CO_2 and water using sunlight) and form the base of the food chain.
  2. Consumers (heterotrophs) — organisms that depend on others for food:
  • Primary consumers (herbivores) — eat plants (e.g. cattle, deer).
  • Secondary consumers (primary carnivores) — eat herbivores.
  • Tertiary consumers (top carnivores) — eat other carnivores. …
