Oparin proposed life arose by chemical evolution: atmospheric gases -> organic molecules -> coacervates -> first cells, in the primitive ocean.

The theory of chemical evolution / origin of life was proposed independently by A. I. Oparin (1924) and J. B. S. Haldane (1929). Its main steps are:

  1. The primitive Earth's atmosphere was reducing (no free oxygen) and contained gases like methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H2) and water vapour.
  2. Using energy from UV rays, lightning and heat, these gases combined to form simple organic molecules such as amino acids, sugars and nitrogenous bases.
  3. These molecules were washed by rain into the primitive warm ocean, forming a 'hot dilute soup' (pre-biotic soup) where they accumulated and reacted to form larger molecules (proteins, nucleic acids).
  4. Colloidal aggregates called coacervates formed, bounded by a membrane-like surface, able to grow and exchange materials with the surroundings. …
