Homologous organs: same origin, different function (divergent evolution). Analogous organs: same function, different origin (convergent evolution).

Homology (Homologous organs)

  • Organs that have the same fundamental structure and embryonic/evolutionary origin but perform different functions.
  • They arise from a common ancestor and indicate divergent evolution.
  • Example: the forelimbs of humans, whales, bats and cheetah have the same basic bone plan (humerus, radius-ulna, carpals, etc.) but are used for grasping, swimming, flying and running respectively. Thorns of Bougainvillea and tendrils of Cucurbita are homologous.

Analogy (Analogous organs)

  • Organs that perform the same function but have different basic structure and origin.
  • They indicate convergent evolution (unrelated groups adapting to similar functions). …
