Natural selection (Darwin): the fitter variants survive and reproduce, so useful traits spread and species evolve. Life originated by chemical evolution from simple molecules in the early ocean.

Individuals within a population show variations; those whose variations make them better adapted to the environment survive and reproduce more successfully — this is 'survival of the fittest' / natural selection.
