Darwinism explains evolution through natural selection: favourable variations survive the struggle for existence and are inherited, forming new species.

Concept. Darwinism is the theory of evolution proposed by Charles Darwin in his book On the Origin of Species (1859), based on Natural Selection. Its main postulates are:

  1. Overproduction (prodigality of reproduction). Every organism produces far more offspring than can survive.
  2. Struggle for existence. Because resources (food, space) are limited, individuals compete — a three-fold struggle (intraspecific, interspecific, and with the environment).
  3. Variations. Individuals of a species show heritable variations; some variations are favourable, others unfavourable.
  4. Natural selection / survival of the fittest. Individuals with favourable variations are better adapted, survive the struggle and reproduce, while the unfit are eliminated. Nature thus 'selects' the fittest.
  5. Inheritance of favourable variations. The favourable variations are passed to the next generation; their gradual accumulation over many generations gives rise to new species (origin of species). …
