Cancer is uncontrolled cell division forming a spreading tumour; prevent by avoiding carcinogens, cure by surgery/radiotherapy/chemotherapy.

What is cancer? Normally, cell growth and division are strictly regulated and cells show contact inhibition (they stop dividing on touching neighbours). In cancer, cells lose this control and divide uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumour. Benign tumours stay localised, but malignant tumours invade surrounding tissue and their cells spread through blood/lymph to other organs — a process called metastasis — which makes cancer dangerous. Cancer is caused by carcinogens: physical (ionising/UV radiation), chemical (tobacco smoke) and biological (oncogenic viruses) agents that activate proto-oncogenes/oncogenes.

Prevention:

  • Avoid tobacco (smoking/chewing) and alcohol.
  • Avoid exposure to carcinogenic chemicals and radiation (UV, X-rays).
  • Eat a healthy diet; get regular screening for early detection.
  • Vaccination (e.g. against Hepatitis B, HPV) to prevent virus-linked cancers.

Cure / treatment:

  • Surgery — removal of the tumour. …
