An oxidation pond is a shallow pond where bacteria + algae together purify sewage; it is an inexpensive natural sewage-treatment method.

An oxidation pond (also called a stabilisation or waste-stabilisation pond) is a large, shallow pond into which sewage or waste water is let in and left for natural biological treatment. In it:

  • Aerobic (and facultative) bacteria decompose the organic matter of the sewage, using oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide and nutrients.
  • Algae growing in the pond use this CO2 and nutrients for photosynthesis and, in turn, release oxygen into the water, which keeps the bacteria supplied with oxygen.

This mutual (symbiotic) relationship between bacteria and algae stabilises and purifies the sewage.
