Biofertilizers are living microbes (Rhizobium, Azotobacter, cyanobacteria, mycorrhiza) that enrich soil with nitrogen/phosphorus and boost yield naturally.

Biofertilizers are organisms that enrich the nutrient quality of the soil in a natural way, chiefly by fixing atmospheric nitrogen or by making phosphorus available to plants.

Sources (main types):

  1. Symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria — Rhizobium, which lives in the root nodules of leguminous plants (pea, gram, beans) and fixes atmospheric nitrogen.
  2. Free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the soil — Azotobacter and Azospirillum.
  3. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) — Anabaena, Nostoc, Oscillatoria, which fix nitrogen and are important in paddy fields; the aquatic fern Azolla harbours Anabaena.
  4. Fungi — mycorrhiza (e.g. Glomus), which associate with plant roots and help absorb phosphorus and other nutrients.
