The genetic code is the triplet (codon) language linking mRNA base sequence to amino acids; it is read three bases at a time during translation.

The genetic code is the relationship (set of rules) between the sequence of nitrogenous bases in the mRNA and the sequence of amino acids in the protein it codes for.

How it works:

  1. The bases of mRNA are read in groups of three consecutive bases; each triplet is called a codon.
  2. There are 4 bases (A, U, G, C), so 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 codons are possible. Of these, 61 codons specify amino acids (there are only 20 amino acids), and 3 (UAA, UAG, UGA) are stop codons that terminate translation. AUG is the start codon (also codes for methionine).
  3. During translation on the ribosome, transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules carry specific amino acids; each tRNA has an anticodon that base-pairs with the complementary codon on the mRNA, so the correct amino acid is placed in sequence and joined by peptide bonds to build the polypeptide.

Features (properties) of the genetic code:

  • Triplet: three bases code for one amino acid. …
