Incomplete dominance is an intragenic (allelic) interaction in which neither allele of a heterozygous pair is completely dominant over the other, so the heterozygote shows a single, new phenotype intermediate between the two homozygous parental phenotypes - genuinely different from both parents, not identical to either. German botanist Carl Correns demonstrated this in 1905 in the four o'clock plant (Mirabilis jalapa): crossing pure-breeding red (R1R1) with pure-breeding white (R2R2) gives an entirely pink F1 (R1R2); selfing the pink F1 gives an F2 in the ratio 1 red (R1R1) : 2 pink (R1R2) : 1 white (R2R2), the identical numerical pattern for genotype and phenotype.
