Embryo sac = 7-celled, 8-nucleate female gametophyte in the ovule; emasculation = removing anthers to prevent self-pollination.

(i) Embryo sac (female gametophyte). Within the ovule, the functional megaspore enlarges and undergoes three free-nuclear mitotic divisions to form 8 nuclei, which organise into a 7-celled, 8-nucleate structure:

  • Egg apparatus at the micropylar end — one egg cell + two synergids (synergids bear the filiform apparatus that guides the pollen tube).
  • Three antipodal cells at the chalazal end.
  • One large central cell with two polar nuclei (which later form the secondary nucleus).

The egg is fertilised by one male gamete (syngamy) and the two polar nuclei by the other (triple fusion) — double fertilisation.
