Ethylamine + HNO2HNO_2 and ethene + H2O/H+H_2O/H^+ both give ethanol; ethanol + acetyl chloride or acetic acid ⇒ ethyl acetate; ethanol is used as solvent, in drinks, as antiseptic and fuel. (This is the main choice of an OR question.)

(I answer the main stem of the OR question.)

Primary alcohol from a primary amine: an aliphatic primary amine reacts with nitrous acid (HNO2HNO_2, from NaNO2+HClNaNO_2+HCl) to give the corresponding alcohol with liberation of nitrogen gas:

C2H5NH2+HNO2→C2H5OH+N2↑+H2OC_2H_5NH_2+HNO_2\to C_2H_5OH+N_2\uparrow+H_2O

Primary alcohol from an alkene: acid-catalysed hydration of ethene (a symmetrical alkene, so Markovnikov gives the primary alcohol) yields ethanol:

CH2=CH2+H2O→H2SO4C2H5OHCH_2=CH_2+H_2O\xrightarrow{H_2SO_4}C_2H_5OH

Reaction with acetyl chloride (acetylation ⇒ ester + HClHCl):

C2H5OH+CH3COCl→CH3COOC2H5+HClC_2H_5OH+CH_3COCl\to CH_3COOC_2H_5+HCl

Reaction with acetic acid (Fischer esterification, reversible, acid-catalysed):

C2H5OH+CH3COOH⇌ conc. H2SO4CH3COOC2H5+H2OC_2H_5OH+CH_3COOH\xrightleftharpoons[\ ]{\text{conc. }H_2SO_4}CH_3COOC_2H_5+H_2O

Main uses of ethyl alcohol (ethanol):

  • as a common solvent for paints, varnishes, drugs and perfumes;
  • in alcoholic beverages; …
