The phenoxide ion is resonance-stabilised over the aromatic ring, so phenol releases H+H^+ readily (acidic); ethoxide has no resonance and the +I methyl worsens it, so ethanol is essentially neutral.

Concept — acidity is about the stability of the conjugate base. A compound is a stronger acid when the anion left after losing H+H^+ is more stable.

Phenol. Removing the –OH proton gives the phenoxide ion, C6H5O−C_6H_5O^-. Its negative charge is not confined to oxygen: it is delocalised into the benzene ring through resonance (the ortho and para carbons share the charge).

C6H5OH⇌C6H5O−+H+C_6H_5OH \rightleftharpoons C_6H_5O^- + H^+

This resonance greatly stabilises the anion, so the equilibrium lies appreciably to the right and phenol behaves as a weak acid (pKa≈10pK_a \approx 10).
