Secondary cell = rechargeable cell; the lead storage cell (Pb anode, PbO2 cathode, H2SO4 electrolyte) works by Pb + PbO2 + 2H2SO4 -> 2PbSO4 + 2H2O on discharge and reverses on charging.

Secondary cell: A secondary (storage) cell is one that can be recharged after use by passing a direct current through it in the reverse direction. The cell reactions are reversible, so the cell can be used through many charge-discharge cycles.

Lead storage cell (lead accumulator):

  • Anode (negative): spongy lead (Pb)
  • Cathode (positive): lead dioxide (PbO2)
  • Electrolyte: about 38% sulphuric acid solution

On discharge (cell delivers current):

Anode: Pb + SO4^2- -> PbSO4 + 2e-

Cathode: PbO2 + 4H+ + SO4^2- + 2e- -> PbSO4 + 2H2O …
