In-phase VV and II ⇒ resistive circuit; current leading voltage by 90∘90^\circ ⇒ capacitive circuit.

Concept. The phase relation between voltage and current identifies the circuit element:

  • Pure resistor: current is in phase with voltage — both reach their maxima and zeros at the same instant.
  • Pure capacitor: current leads the voltage by a quarter cycle (90∘90^\circ, i.e. π/2\pi/2) — the current curve peaks before the voltage curve.
