Let the two equal charges q be separated by a distance 2d, with Q placed at the midpoint (distance d from each q).

Consider one outer charge q. It feels:

  1. Repulsion from the other q (distance 2d): F₁ = k q²/(2d)² = k q²/(4d²), directed outward.
