Force on Q = (kQ/a²)(√2 q + Q/2) along the diagonal; total PE U = (k/a)[4Qq + (Q²+q²)/√2], with k = 1/4πε₀.

The square (side a) has Q at the top-left and bottom-right corners (one diagonal) and q at the top-right and bottom-left corners (other diagonal). Let k = 1/4πε₀.

(i) Resultant force on the charge Q (top-left):

Its three neighbours are:

  • q at top-right, distance a: force F₁ = kQq/a² (along the top edge).
  • q at bottom-left, distance a: force F₂ = kQq/a² (along the left edge). F₁ and F₂ are mutually perpendicular, so their resultant is √(F₁² + F₂²) = √2 · kQq/a², directed along the diagonal (away from the centre, toward the top-left).
  • Q at bottom-right, distance a√2 (the diagonal): force F₃ = kQ²/(a√2)² = kQ²/(2a²), directed along the same diagonal (outward).

Since the resultant of F₁, F₂ and the force F₃ all lie along the same diagonal direction, they add:

F = √2 · kQq/a² + kQ²/(2a²) = (kQ/a²)(√2 q + Q/2).
