A cylindrical Gaussian surface around an infinite line charge gives E(2πrℓ)=λℓε0E(2\pi r\ell)=\dfrac{\lambda\ell}{\varepsilon_0}, so the radial field is E=λ2πε0rE=\dfrac{\lambda}{2\pi\varepsilon_0 r}.

Setup. Let an infinitely long straight wire carry a uniform linear charge density λ\lambda (charge per unit length). By symmetry the field E⃗\vec E points radially outward (for λ>0\lambda>0) and has the same magnitude at every point a distance rr from the wire.

Choose the Gaussian surface. Take a coaxial cylinder of radius rr and length ℓ\ell.

  • Curved surface: E⃗\vec E is parallel to the area vector everywhere and constant in magnitude, so flux =E (2πrℓ)=E\,(2\pi r\ell).
  • Flat end caps: E⃗\vec E is perpendicular to the area vector (parallel to the caps), so their flux is zero.

Apply Gauss's law. Charge enclosed =λℓ=\lambda\ell. Then …
