Question of 56

Q.The area of each plate of a parallel plate capacitor is A and separation between them is d. As shown in the figure, slabs of dielectric constants k1 and k2 are placed in between the plates. Find out the capacitance of the capacitor.

UP Board Class 12 Physics capacitance: a parallel plate capacitor of plate area A and separation d with two dielectric slabs placed side by side between the plates, dielectric k1 over area A/3 and dielectric k2 over area 2A/3 (parallel combination).

Side-by-side dielectrics → capacitors in parallel: C = (ε₀A/3d)(k₁ + 2k₂).

When two dielectric slabs are placed side by side between the plates (each spanning the full separation d but only part of the plate area), the arrangement is equivalent to two capacitors connected in parallel, because the plates are at common potentials and the areas simply add.

Capacitor 1 (dielectric k₁, area A/3, separation d):

C₁ = ε₀ k₁ (A/3) / d.
