The slab reduces the effective gap; C=ε0Ad−t+t/KC=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0A}{d-t+t/K}.

Set-up. Parallel plates of area AA, separation dd, carrying surface charge density σ=Q/A\sigma=Q/A. A dielectric slab of thickness tt (t<dt<d) and dielectric constant KK is inserted between them.

Fields. In the air gaps (total thickness d−td-t) the field is E0=σε0E_0=\dfrac{\sigma}{\varepsilon_0}. Inside the dielectric the field is reduced to E=E0K=σKε0E=\dfrac{E_0}{K}=\dfrac{\sigma}{K\varepsilon_0}.

Potential difference across the plates:

V=E0(d−t)+E t=σε0(d−t)+σKε0t=σε0(d−t+tK).V=E_0(d-t)+E\,t=\frac{\sigma}{\varepsilon_0}(d-t)+\frac{\sigma}{K\varepsilon_0}t=\frac{\sigma}{\varepsilon_0}\left(d-t+\frac{t}{K}\right).
