Parallel-plate capacitance is C=ε0AdC=\dfrac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}; increase it with larger plate area, smaller gap, or a dielectric.

Derivation. Consider two parallel plates each of area AA, separated by dd, carrying charge +Q+Q and −Q-Q. The surface charge density is σ=QA\sigma=\dfrac{Q}{A}.

The uniform field between the plates is

E=σε0=Qε0A.E=\frac{\sigma}{\varepsilon_0}=\frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0 A}.

The potential difference between the plates is

V=E d=Qdε0A.V=E\,d=\frac{Qd}{\varepsilon_0 A}.

By definition, capacitance C=QVC=\dfrac{Q}{V}:

C=Q Qd/(ε0A) =ε0Ad.C=\frac{Q}{\,Qd/(\varepsilon_0 A)\,}=\frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}.

How to increase the capacity.

  1. Increase the plate area AA (since C∝AC\propto A). …
